Bodalla is a village on the highway, nine kilometres from Potato Point. It began European life as the dairy estate of Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, a pioneer in large-scale cheese making and refrigeration. It’s bracketed by two churches: the shingle-walled Catholic church designed by Horbury Hunt; and All Saints, the Anglican Church designed by Edmund Blacket, and built from granite quarried a few kilometres down the highway. The organ in All Saints was made by Henry Willis and Sons of London, a preeminent British organ-builder. Both architects are famous in Australia, and it’s a bit of a treat to have two such churches in a very small town

Lovely attention to details – I wasn’t able to comment on some of the individual photos for some reason, but I love the arches, the texture, the patterns and the beautiful stained glass. Well thought out galleries 🙂

What a lovely post this is, Meg. I love all the details- the wooden slats and the patterns in the stonework. And the stained glass and carved wood is beautiful. I feel quite relaxed under those blue skies. Ours are heavy and grey right now and it may not get light! Never mind- it’s a ‘working’ day for me. Ironing, and Dad’s to clean and bake a corned beef pie. Take care! 🙂

I love the way you have been able to show the quality and beauty of the interior of All Saints. You have a wonderful eye for detail which has done the original benefactors, builders and artists of both churches proud. It might be of interest that there was a connection between the architects Edmund Blacket and John Horbury Hunt, as Horbury Hunt worked in Blacket’s practice for a time during his early years in Australia. The two churches also demonstrate the change in prevailing taste from Gothic to Arts & Crafts styles. Bodalla is indeed fortunate to have these treasures.
