Heading home after a week away I stopped for a few treats. In Bathurst I visited the Fossil and Mineral Museum, a splendid collection made over many years by Warren Somerville. I discovered the existence of this museum on Bruce Elder's Facebook page
which gives an interesting account of Somerville's passion.
The Cowra Rose Garden was my second treat, a dawn ramble before I drove on to Canberra. I saw it a few months ago when all the bushes were pruned and mulched: 130 varieties, more than 800 bushes, being made ready to burst into this luxuriant October bloom.
I could almost smell those roses. You caught them at their best, and fossils fascinate me too.

Great treats indeed, Meg! Love those roses…

I thought you’d be a fan of fossils – although they don’t show the glories of age through decay, do they?

Those fossils are amazing, so clear, the ferns especially and I love the white roses. What perfect places to stop along your way, you must have been in seventh heaven!

That Australian towns website works a bit like a hoponhopoff bus. If you’re only in a town for a brief time it directs your attention to wonders. Only trouble is he’s only halfway through his every-town-in-Australia project, and all the places near our holiday were still missing.

Beautiful roses, I’m glad you went back to see them in bloom.

My itinerising for that trip was totally wonky. Fortunately I checked the map before I went off gallivanting in wrong directions!

Must be the old ‘great minds’ thing, working overtime, Meg! Aside from playing with roses, I’ll be in a museum in my next post! 🙂 Dilly dallying! 🙂 Your roses are beautiful and are a lovely contrast to the fossils. Happy weekend!

I’m glad you picked up on the contrast. I’m enjoying the way roses are featuring on both sides of the world. I’m looking forward to your museum dilly-dally.
