Paula offers this generous pick a word challenge once a month. She bestows five words on us; her superlative photographic interpretation; and an invitation to join in. This month Melbourne has provided me with images for two of the words.
This tree in the Botanical Gardens, whose identity I recently deleted, provides me with the perfect image for branching.
The drinking fountain near my apartment and the Queen Victoria Markets represents the vigilance of the women of the temperance union and reminds me of the temperance pledge I signed at primary school, long since breached. That admonitory hand amongst skyscrapers and autumn leaves rebukes me.

Fabulous tree! Goodness why did you have to sign a temperance pledge in primary school? Did they think you were going to be a pre-puberty binge drinker?

Wonderful tree and I was unaware that temperance was big enough in Australia to warrant a statue.

Those were the days of the 6 o’clock swill – blokes imbibing all they could before the pubs shut at 6. The Temperance League were fighting back. They may well have a useful role now if they figured out how to be effective. Alcohol is a bit too much an Australian way of life: no celebration without it. I’m sounding as if the temperance pledge got to me!

I remember the 6pm closing but I was too young for it to impact on me and my parents weren’t pub goers. I agree alcohol is too much the Australian way of life and I consider it our worst drug problem. So much harm comes of it to the drinker, their family and friends and other innocent people.

I knew I would enjoy entries for branching and was hoping that people would find sufficient examples of vigilant. As for temperance: that word is not even in my vocabulary and much less in my character 😆 Thank you for joining me, Meg. Always nice to see your world.

Temperance of them there days has now been superseded by national drink driving laws, and the consequences a gratifying increase to government coffers and safer roads. Disclaimer: I’m allergic to Alcohol, and Caffeine! Prue
